Hydropower Generation

Hydropower has been the leading Brazilian energy source for decades. With most of the energy coming from hydro, due to Brazil’s abundance of powerful rivers.

Small Hydroelectric Plants (CGH & PCH) in Brazil

PCHs and CGHS have a total operating power of 6,178,706.16 kW; PCHs are ranked 5th among the country's energy sources. And CGHs occupying 7th place with 822,877.67 kW generated.

Small Hydro plants and the Environment

Small Hydros of PCH and CGH types are low environmental impact projects which protect the banks of rivers against erosion and make multiple use of water for irrigation, fish farming, leisure and supplying the city where the project is.

The CGH  plants have the potential to generate up to 5 megawatts (MW) of energy. Brazil has 732 CGH plant units in operation installed throughout its territory. The PCH type must have between 5 and 50MW of power and less than 13 km² of reservoir area.
